Panel Discussion a Highlight of Unexpected Choices Exhibit

September 3, 2024

The Unexpected Choices exhibit, which opened recently at Lowell Arts, will host a panel discussion and reception on Sunday, September 8. Members of the panel represent various aspects of the graphic design discipline; each had a role in at least one of the projects included in the exhibit. Panelists include:

  • Leslie Black: Over her career, Leslie has contributed to or led a number of agencies in the Grand Rapids area, including Paul Deur Design, Williams Marketing Services, Square One Design, and Leslie Black Design. She was instrumental in the Autocam work included in the exhibit.
  • Yolanda Gonzalez: Yolanda has worked primarily as an illustrator, including for the Opera Grand Rapids campaign included in the exhibit. Partner in Grand Rapids-based Mr. & Mrs., she has just returned from teaching at Anderson Ranch Art Center, in Snowmass, Colorado.
  • Yang Kim: Yang was a co-founder of People Design (formerly BBK Studio) over 25 years ago, following a five-year stint at Herman Miller. She has literally “written the book” on building brands by envisioning, designing, and producing innovative customer experiences.
  • Barbara Loveland: Barbara brings to design discussions her experience as an award-winning in-house designer for Herman Miller and an educator during the formative years of Ferris State University’s graphic design program. As a co-founder of the archives, she’s knowledgeable about much of the work on exhibit.
  • Chuck Oleniczak: As a representative of French Paper and other paper manufacturers, Chuck became an invaluable resource to many West Michigan designers and printers. Deeply knowledgeable about paper production and options, he helped designers find creative solutions.

The panel will be moderated by Lois Maassen, long-time communications professional and member of the board of the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives.

Because seating is limited, an RSVP is required for this free event. Doors open at 2:00 p.m., remarks begin at 2:45 p.m., and the panel discussion begins at 3:00 p.m.
